Development of an accessible website for a museum

We took on the technical implementation of a new, barrier-free website for the German Sports & Olympic Museum in Cologne’s Rheinauhafen. The aim was to make the contents of the collection—over 2,000 objects and the eventful history of sport—accessible to as many people as possible, while at the same time using a modern, flexible CMS system.

Accessibility

One of the museum’s key objectives was to create a barrier-free website that is equally accessible to all users. We focused on providing multiple options for navigation: the website works on desktop and mobile devices, can be operated using either a mouse or keyboard, and supports assistive technologies for people with visual impairments.

We advised the museum and the agency on all aspects of accessibility, including the selection of high-contrast colors, the maintenance of alternative texts for images and media, and the integration of a read-aloud function for pages and documents.
