The Newstest

Design and development of a web application about news literacy

The Newstest is a web application that allows people to test their skills in dealing with digital news. We developed it on behalf of Interface – formerly Stiftung Neue Verantwortung (SNV) – from the initial concept and design to the technical implementation. The goal was to create an easy-to-understand, motivating, and accessible format that conveys complex content in a playful way and helps users reflect on their own media behavior.

The Newstest went online in March 2021 and was used by over 300,000 visitors within the first three weeks—200,000 in the first five days alone. The feedback was consistently positive: users praised its relevance and emphasized that you can really learn something new from the test. The application received a lot of attention and was linked to Spiegel Online, among others, which further increased its reach.

Since then, the Newstest has been continuously developed and has even attracted interest across borders. Students at the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences have adapted it for Austria in collaboration with the Wiener Zeitung newspaper.

Today, the Newstest belongs to the Media Authority Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb) – and we continue to work on the product to keep it up to date in terms of technology, visuals, and content.
